3. St. Vincent
What's Oscar Bait About The Idea? Ever couple of years or so a movie comes along aiming for a Little Miss Sunshine response - major audience love bolstering its stand-out elements (usually a single performance, and hopefully the script) to glory. St. Vincent is one of those, with Bill Murray doing his usual schtick, but in a sensitive way, and Harvey Weinstein distributing. Was It Any Good? If clearly sign-posted sentimentality is your thing, St. Vincent will probably be a fun time. Otherwise there's not much here - like many of the Little Miss Sunshine apers, Vincent forgets to deliver a coherent piece, focusing only on those award-potential parts. Was There Any Major Campaigning? Even though it only came out a few months ago, St. Vincent already feels like a distant memory, which should make clear that the Weinstein's really didn't bother pushing it that much. Murray was enjoyable in the film, and his grump-does-good is the sort of thing that could have stood a chance in another year, but this season he's not even a near-miss - it's a performance a cut below the snubs of Timothy Spall's in Mr. Turner or Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Will It Get Anything For Its Efforts? After the Golden Globes, it's been a pretty quiet time for St. Vincent, with not even a look in at the Oscars. Although that's hardly surprising.
