8. The Santa Story - Gremlins

In Gremlins, a failed inventor buys a Mogwai called Gizmo for his son, Billy, for Christmas. After Gizmo spawns a horde of gremlins, they tear the house apart and terrorise the city. While Billy is assessing the damage to his home, his sort-of girlfriend Kate suddenly says the gremlins have given her a new reason to hate Christmas.

She then tells Billy about the time her father tried to surprise her when she was a child by coming down the chimney dressed as Santa. But as soon as he tried to climb down, he fell and broke his neck. She concludes her grisly tale with the line, 'And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.'

First off, this movie is PG so A LOT of kids learned the truth about Santa during this monologue so, cheers, Kate. Give us a spoilers warning next time.

Secondly, what does this speech have to do with anything? It isn't brought up again so it has zero pay-off.

This haunting monologue received so many complaints, filmmaker Joe Dante poked fun at it by giving Kate ANOTHER depressing story to tell in the sequel.
