10 Most Out Of Place Scenes In Sci-Fi Movie History

9. Techno Diva Dance – The Fifth Element (1997)

The Matrix Reloaded Zion
Buena Vista International

'90s classic The Fifth Element represents its cast and crew at their best, bringing together a post-Léon Luc Besson and Gary Oldman, a post-12 Monkeys Bruce Willis, and a post-Dazed and Confused Milla Jovovich for a rip-roaring future-Earth sci-fi where everyone just lets loose and has an absolute ball. 23rd century NYC cabbie Korben Dallas (Willis) teams up with Leeloo (Jovovich), the embodiment of the sacred fifth element, to keep an ancient, planet-eating cosmic force from destroying the world. Calamity ensues.

While the film features many wild and wacky digressions, none are stranger than the space opera sequence. Korben and Leeloo follow a quest for some sacred stones (go with it) to a blue diva called Plavalaguna (Maïwenn Le Besco). But, before they can reclaim them, they – and we – are forced to sit through an excruciating few minutes of space opera. Techno music kicks in, the diva throws some shapes, and the audience cringe from behind their fingers.

This scene is awkward, uncomfortable and seriously out of place, which is saying a lot for a film with Chris Tucker's loud, flamboyant intergalactic talk-show host going down on an air hostess during take-off...
