10 Most Out Of Place Scenes In Sci-Fi Movie History

2. Zion Orgy Rave – The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

The Matrix Reloaded Zion

The re-emergence of the Matrix has, of late, sent many of us down memory lane, revisiting 1999's stone-cold sci-fi classic and its sequels. While the first of these, The Matrix Reloaded, has its share of issues, there is still a lot to love, so long as you can see past the rubbery CGI Smith fight, Colonel Sanders' five-minute waffle, and the great big, sweaty, underground orgy rave...

After some initial wall-running and gun-slinging to sate fans' thirst for shiny leather action, the free people of Zion gather in an underground cavern so MC Morpheus can kick off the biggest rave the world has ever seen (probably). Thus ensues a mass of bodies bumping and grinding to some dirty beats, intercut with Neo and Trinity getting jiggy with it.

The scene might belong better to Trainspotting or Human Traffic, feeling at odds with the tone and broader content of the Matrix films. What possessed the Wachowskis to include this goes beyond rational understanding. Perhaps one too many red pills.

While The Matrix Resurrections (2021) may not have been the radical realignment we all hoped for, it at least managed to skirt any of the more egregious misfires of its predecessors. Thank Morpheus there was no orgy on Io. Nobody wants to see grandma Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) get her rocks off to some thumping bass. But don't tell Will.
