10 Most Outrageous Superhero Movies Of All Time
3. The Return Of Captain Invincible
Christopher Lee plays Mr Midnight, a song and dance supervillain who steals the Hypno-Ray, which he uses to convince people that the worthless land he’s selling them is really prime real estate. When the American President gets wind of this, he demands that a superhero be dispatched to tackle this supervillain, but the only one left is Captain Invincible, who became an alcoholic after being accused of flying without a license by Senator Joseph McCarthy.
If you think that sounds like the set-up for a bizarre, campy spoof of superhero movies….well, you’re right. The co-writer is Steven E De Souza (Street Fighter) and the director is Phillippe Mora, who later re-teamed with Lee for Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf, so “bizarre” probably doesn’t do the movie justice. “Outrageous” is more like it.
The first superhero movie musical – shot in Australia, yet – Captain Invincible features ten songs, three of which were written by Richard O’Brien, which isn’t hard to guess when some very Rocky Horror-ish backing singers turn up. One of the best scenes has Mr Midnight taunt Cap by singing “Name Your Poison”, a drinking song that lists more than thirty alcoholic beverages.
They really don’t make them like this anymore, do they?
