10 Most Overrated Directors Working Today

8. Ben Affleck

ben affleck batman Before you click this article off and start ranting to your co-workers about "some guy on the internet who's having a go at Ben Affleck," let me say one thing: Ben Affleck is a fine director. His films remind me - both stylistically and thematically - of the better ones by another former actor turned director: Mr. Clint Eastwood. And though the world is probably just getting a little bit too excited because, well, for all we knew Ben Affleck was a talentless hack, I don't quite think his career has made a jump worthy of all these sudden accolades. So let's talk Argo. Argo was a solid film, but are you really looking forward to seeing it again? Maybe you are, and that's okay. But for what my two cents is worth, it wasn't much more than a well-acted thriller, slightly bland and lacking identity, though paced with a certain perfection, I'll admit. So if I say that Ben Affleck is overrated, I'm really referring to Argo: for my money, both The Town and Gone Baby Gone were far more entertaining movies. Affleck certainly has a promising future ahead of him, that's for sure, I'd just hate to overstate his greatness so soon. He isn't there yet.
