7. A Bigger Splash

At its core, A Bigger Splash is a dark drama, but it's also a murder mystery (sort of) and an erotic thriller and, hey, it's sort of a comedy as well. I don't know: it's kind of everything, and then none of these things at the same time. Still, it was met with widespread critical acclaim - a fact that's sure to baffle many who saw it.

A Bigger Splash has all the elements of a great movie, after all, but it doesn't quite know what to do with any them. There's Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes, so you've got your top-level acting talent, and then there's Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts as the eye candy (both of whom are pretty great here, too).

The setting: an island in Italy, as four individuals - a rockstar, her lover, her former manager (and ex-lover) and his "daughter" - are drawn together for a holiday in which everyone's goal seems to be to make everyone else feel horribly insecure. Despite its basic premise, though, the film somehow adopts a confusing tone - like you walked in five minutes late and missed out on a really crucial piece of information.

Whilst the sexual tension between the main four eventually reaches breaking point, it takes a long time for anything to happen... and when it actually does, the film ends not long after. "What was the point?" is the one sentiment that might end up ringing in your ears afterwards. A real shame, considering Ralph Fiennes's phenomenal turn.
