10 Most Paused Horror Movie Moments

8. Uninvited Guest - Insidious (2010)

Insidious: The Red Door has recently hit cinemas, and marks the return of the Lambert family from the original film, ready (or not, as the case may be) to take another plunge into the Further.

But it is the original film that's gaze back on here, as it contained not only the most pause-friendly moment in the series, but one of the franchise's most bone-chilling scares. Josh Lambert's (Patrick Wilson) mother Lorraine arrives at the new Lambert homestead telling of a spate of nightmares she has been having involving Josh and Renai's (Rose Byrne) son Dalton. Told to the family around the dining table, Lorraine's recurring nightmare features a demon with a red face who has been stalking Dalton's bedroom at night.

Cutting back and forth between Lorraine's face, Josh and Renai's reactions, and the creepy images of her dreams, we are primed for a scare in the frame of the story, but not one in the real present. Thus, we're totally unprepared when the big, red, Darth-Maul-on-meth looking guy Lorraine is talking about pokes his head out from behind Josh and projects the sounds of hell right at us.

"I can still hear that voice", Lorraine says, right before the screamer strikes. Her and us both.
