4. The Cubes - The Cabin In The Woods (2011)

The Conjuring Bathsheba
Lionsgate

Joss Whedon's meta horror The Cabin in the Woods is something of a love letter to the genre that takes all of its tropes and turns them inside out.

When a group of college friends assemble at a remote cabin for a wild weekend, and begin playing with the mysterious objects scattered around the place, it can only go one way. And it does, at first, with hillbilly zombies storming the cabin to take their pound of flesh. But a whole other dimension is soon uncovered as it turns out the cabin is fake and a big corporation is running the show, releasing different monsters depending on the actions the students take, in order to obtain a blood sacrifice for the mysterious Ancient Ones.

Always keen to give us a tasty Easter egg or two, Whedon takes the group's survivors, and us, deep within the organisation's facility to where the monsters are kept. Cube upon transparent cube house creatures that pay homage to every major horror franchise, and even some of the more niche ones. While a whole bunch of these monsters get loose and start tearing up the personnel, some only make blink-and-you'll-miss-'em appearances.

Suffice to say, the pause button has taken a good hammering while trying to spot our horror movie favourites in one wide-angle pull-out that captures hundreds of the cubes in all their glory.
