6. American Sniper

Total Downloads: 33.9 million Clint Eastwood's big screen version of the life and military career of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle tapped into a fairly jingoistic vein in the US. Movies which advocate the individual heroism of America's military personnel - especially during a messy conflict like the War on Terror - tend to do better on the other side of the pond than anywhere else (see also: Lone Survivor, Act of Valor). They provide necessary solace for the general US public, telling them that while they're in a foreign country for vague reasons, stacking up collateral damage like nobody's business, at least the killing machines they've sent there have each other's backs. It's a logic that's barely logical, but there you have it. American Sniper's entry on this list most likely amounts to its patriotic appeal to Americans (which is ironic, considering torrenting movies harms one of the USA's biggest industries) and the desire for people to understand what the buzz surrounding the film was about - buzz that equalled about $547 million in worldwide box office takings.
