10 Most Polarising Actors Of All-Time

10. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp never used to be a polarising actor; not really, anyway. One could certainly argue that his performances in early "quirk" classics like Edward Scissorhands and Benny & Joon had an air of the insufferable about them, but - at the time, at least - they felt fresh and different. They held nothing of the self-conscious, tic-addled turns glimpsed in more recent movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. And it was movies of that absurd, purposely hyperactive nature that led to the flipping of a switch as far as the public were concerned; Depp went from cool heartthrob to whimsical goofball, and all the good will he had mustered up on account of his acclaimed Jack Sparrow role in Pirates of the Caribbean began to feel like an accident. Quite simply, he overindulged in too many similar roles - all weirdness, no acting - with recent flop Mortdecai marking the point at which Depp's career died a death. He still has a few defenders, of course, but nobody really seems sure what to think about Johnny Depp right now; he's gone from one of his own generation's great actors to somebody who fits quite comfortably onto a list like this. Who'd have thought it?
