3. Iron Man 3

It's not so much Iron Man 3 as a whole that divided Marvel fans, just one ballsy creative decision by director Shane Black.

Obviously that was his choice to reduce The Mandarin, one of the greatest comic book villains of all time, to a mere red herring.

Reinventing the megalomanical bad guy as a modern-day terrorism loosely based on Osama Bin Laden wasn't enough for Black, who later outed Ben Kingsley's character as a washed-up actor named Trevor Slattery.

This was controversial, to say the least, with some lauding the move as a curveball they never saw coming, and others scoffing at a perceived debasement of Marvel legacy. Opinions on Iron Man 3 often hinge on how well this twist sits with the individual.

In an attempt to please everyone, Marvel has since released the short film All Hail The King, which hints that the real Mandarin is still at large in the MCU.
