A24 Films have earned a solid reputation for delivering challenging independent movies destined for cult status, with diverse titles such as Ex Machina, Under The Skin and The Spectacular Now demonstrating an ability to flit effortlessly between genres.

Robert Eggers's directorial debut, The Witch, consolidated their knack of producing high quality, serious-minded horror films, garnering rave reviews for its powerful visuals, strong performances and masterful tone. Many horror fans agreed with the critics, with some instantly citing it as a "masterpiece" which avoided the cheap tricks so often found in horror and captured something vital about the paranoid religious 17th century setting.

Not everyone was pleased with the slow approach to horror, and many felt that they had been mislead by a marketing campaign which promised a "terrifying" horror experience, but instead delivered something which seemed to be striving for high art rather than solid thrills.

It's highly likely that Robert Eggers's next film will be equally responsible for controversy - The Lighthouse, scheduled for 2019, is a remake of one of the most iconic horror films of all time: Nosferatu.
