10 Most Polarising Horror Movies Of All Time
3. Hereditary
Hereditary hasn't been around for long, having only been released earlier in 2018, but even in this short space of time it has generated more polarizing discussions online than perhaps any other horror film in recent memory. Few films have had such a clear ability to divide audiences down the middle quite like it.
In part this polarization is once again the result of A24's marketing campaign, which sold Hereditary to audiences as "the scariest movie ever made!", much as marketing for The Witch similarly drew some horror fans into what they felt was a trap. Hardcore fans of the genre were certainly left with a "seen it all before" aftertaste, calling out Hereditary for being a watered down version of better films such as Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man and Kill List.
But Hereditary's many fans completely agreed with the hype, praising the performances for elevating the melodramatic core towards an instant modern horror classic. Either way, Hereditary's impressive performance at the box office should mean that first time director Ari Aster is one to watch.
