It hardly needs saying that The Phantom Menace was an absolute clusterf**k of a film, because the amount of things wrong with that movie (and the prequel trilogy in general) have been dissected countless times, in ways better than I could express. However, one of the redeeming qualities is in the villain, the, er, menacing Darth Maul. Looking extremely creepy, Maul wielded his dual-bladed lightsaber with impressive skill and, having learnt from Darth Sidious, was extremely attuned to the Dark Side of the Force. He had an extremely agile and ferocious fighting style, which he used to almost kill Qui-Gon Jinn when they fought on Tatooine (no mean feat in itself), and later finish off the job even when facing both him and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Although he was ultimately killed by Obi-Wan, only appearing in the one film, there's no denying his status as one of the most powerful Sith Lords we meet across the six films.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
