2. Hermione Granger ('Harry Potter' Series)

Smart, studious and just a little smug, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) is essentially how Lisa Simpson might've turned out had she attended a better school. She's a know-it-all, afraid of failure, the first to point out others' mistakes. It's no surprise to discover that even her best friends Harry and Ron consider her arrogant on their first encounter. But, following their narrow escape from Fluffy, the three-headed dog in The Philosopher's Stone, Hermione utters one of her most famous- if not defining- lines: ''I'm going to bed, before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed- or worse, expelled!'' and her reputation as a smartass was thus sealed. But as the octalogy rumbled on, she established herself as more than a bit-part (although using a time-travel spell to take more classes seemed a little like self-parody). Despite her extensive knowledge of arcane potions, it was her punching Malfoy in The Prisoner of Azkaban that drew a celebratory whoop from many a Potterhead. Needy, nerdy and, now, a role model for a generation.
