10 Most Ridiculous Pieces Of Product Placement In 2014 Films
6. Nightcrawler's Whole Dodge Thing
Then you get to the ones where the product in question isn't only a part of the plot, but is being fawned over by characters in the same way the manufacturers are expecting the audience to. The Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Nightcrawler was designed to be a scathing critique of modern media, and its squeamish attempts to get the big story by any means necessary. It deigns to have its cake and eat it, however, indulging in the sort of iffy morals as the world it's trying to satirise. Well, it doesn't go so far as to show actual dead bodies and the like, but it indulges in some of the most crass product placement of the year, with Gyllenhaal's reporter like a James Bond who lives in the gutter, looking at the stars. As he starts to go up in the world, getting paid some major money for some of his ill-gotten scoops, Nightcrawler's paparazzi protagonist, Lou Bloom, decides to splash out. Not on a Ferrari, or a Lambo, or whatever, but on a red Dodge Challenger 392 SRT. Supposedly the muscle car is symbolic of his driving, aggressive approach to journalism. It probably put some money in the pockets of the producers, too.
