10 Most Ridiculously Awesome Montages In Movie History
What we've come to categorised as "montages" nowadays started life in the 1920s, when the Soviets decided to get innovative and change cinema forever. Whereas the Russians defined "montage" as cutting between different angles as opposed to just changing scenes completely (big at the time), "montage" has since come to signify a series of shots, usually accompanied by an inspirational and rather cheesy soundtrack cue, charting the progress of an underdog as they try to become more awesome at something. The '80s is specifically renowed for its montages, for reasons that are yet to be explained by anyone. Montages come in all shapes and sizes, of course, but there are few specific types that we've become accustomed to due to years of exposure: the good old "training" montage remains a favourite of sorts, though the "rise to power" and "character working their way through a competition" montages have their fans, too. Though we look back on most of cinema's retro-inclined montages like they're some far-out dream, we all secretly enjoy them, don't we? To celebrate a history of the most eccentric and less artful movie montages, here's 10 of the most ridiculously awesome examples that have been bestowed upon society. Most of the montages I've included on this list have dated horribly, and a bunch of them may be bordering on the absurd or bizarrely over the top, but what we absolutely cannot deny is that all of them ignite a strange, transcendant fire stirring deep inside each and every one of us. Or whatever: it's mostly 'cause they're unintentionally hilarious.
