8. Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl (2009)

In the wake of the Twlight saga, we are of course well acquainted with hunky, high school age vampire and werewolf dudes doing battle over the affections of a human girl, albeit in a very chaste, respectful and bloodless manner. Fine, if that€™s to your taste. But how about a couple of monster girls fighting over a guy, with gore flying by the gallon? Now that sounds a bit more like it... Co-directed by Japan€™s premier gore FX maestro Yoshihiro Nishimura and pinku eiga director Naoyuki Tomamatsu, this live action adaptation of Shungiku Uchida€™s manga is one of the most gleefully over-the-top and deliberately offensive horror comedies of recent years. Not content with packing as much bloodshed as the likes of The Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl also take bad taste humour to a whole new level, sure to sport at least one gag liable to upset just about anyone (those with concerns about €˜safe spaces€™ and €˜trigger warnings€™ might want to steer clear). And yet there€™s a curious sweetness to it all, given that at heart it€™s an old-fashioned high school love triangle story, as undead new girl Monami (Yukie Kawamura) goes head to head with the school€™s alpha female Keiko (Eri Otoguro) for the affections of pretty boy Mizushima (Takumi Saito) €“ a rivalry which goes to a whole new level when Keiko is accidentally killed, then brought back as a super-powered Frankenstein by her mad scientist father. The fact that Mizushima is basically given no choice in the matter and shows little sign of being interested in either girl just makes it all the more smirk-inducing.
