We have to start with this one to get it out of the way. It is, after all, probably the most famous and well-loved body-reveal in horror movie history.
It certainly wouldn’t be a push to say that nowadays, most people who watch Psycho know the twist - it may well even be the reason they’re watching in the first place. Back when the movie first hit screens in 1960 though, not a single audience member had a clue what they were in for.
After an hour or so of watching things unfold at Bates Motel, convinced that a mad old lady was the murderer behind it all, audiences received their first shock when the sheriff explained how Mrs Bates had been dead for years. Nothing could’ve prepared them, however, for that fateful moment when her mummified corpse is revealed in the basement.
Little did Alfred Hitchcock know at the time, this moment would go on to become one of the most iconic and recognisable in the whole genre. Even if critics at the time had some pretty mixed things to say about it, at the end of the day the film’s incredible legacy speaks for itself.
