10 Most Shocking Horror Movie Endings
7. The Descent: The Escape Was Just A Dream
The original British theatrical cut of The Descent seriously trolled the audience right at the end. It lulls viewers into a false sense of security, making them think protagonist Sarah has escaped to freedom. She's a little worse for wear after encountering those cave monsters, but she'll get over it, right?
Wrong. In the original version of the movie, Sarah's escape from the maze-like caverns is only a daydream, brought about by her own insanity.
After showing her on the road to freedom for a few minutes, the film quickly jumps back to the monster-infested caves where the protagonist is still well and truly trapped. The monsters are closing in, and she's too busy having another hallucination - this time about her dead daughter's birthday party - to realise.
This is an unsettling conclusion that hits home from nowhere. Sure, it's bleak, but there's something realistic about it too. Wouldn't you descend into insanity if you were trapped underground with those creatures?
