10 Most Surprising Underdog Oscar Victories
5. Eminem
Eminem went down in Academy Award history in 2003 when he shared
the win for Best Original Song for 8 Mile’s Lose Yourself with co-writers Jeff
Bass and Luis Resto, marking the first time a rap song had ever won an Oscar.
Award presenter Barbra Streisand seemed surprised announcing Lose Yourself – which contains one ‘god damn’, two ‘hoes’ and two ‘motherf*ckings’ – as the winner. Considering that some other winners from around that time include Randy Newman, Phil Collins and schmaltzy Titanic theme tune My Heart Will Go On, Streisand’s surprise is quite understandable.
Unfortunately, the man of the moment himself had chosen not to attend the Oscars thinking he wouldn’t be in with a chance of winning and was reportedly dozing at his Michigan home while his daughter watched cartoons when co-writer Resto stepped up to accept the award.
