10 Most Tasteless And Outrageous Directors In Movie History

2. John Waters

The official 'Pope Of Trash', the early movies in the John Waters' canon are terrific fun to watch for lovers of the tasteless and outrageous. Waters managed to get a really good cotillion of characters around him like Edith Massey, Divine and Mink Stole. Divine is especially sensational in all of his/her roles. Cineastes will forever remember Divine as the eater of dog poop at the end of Pink Flamingos in her bid to be crowned 'The Filthiest Person Alive'. In fact, all of Waters' movies are great fun right up to Pecker and Cecil B Demented. But before he sold his soul for a milder variety of Hollywood tastelessness, there was some hardcore outrageousness going on in his early career. Desperate Living depicts the squalid and sordid slum land dictatorship called Mortville where Peggy and Grizelda are sent after killing Peggy's husband. Queen Carlotta rules Mortville with an iron fist and some really camp guards who make Arnold Schwarzenegger look effeminate. Female Trouble is notable for scenes in which Divine rapes himself/herself and also the utterance from Edith Massey's character: "The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life!". Waters would go on to direct a series of mild to moderate subversive films in Hollywood. But they don't hold a candle to his vulgar, trashy, entertaining early work.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
