Not to be confused with the 2020 reboot of the same name, director Takashi Shimizu brought the eerie suspense of Ju-On: The Grudge (which was the third entry in the Japanese horror series) to English-speaking audiences with The Grudge.

The film stars Buffy's Sarah Michelle Geller as a home carer tasked with looking after an elderly woman after the previous carer mysteriously disappeared.

Unbeknownst to her, the house is plagued by a malevolent curse that attaches itself to anyone who enters. From here, The Grudge delves into the home's dreadful history to unravel the mystery of what happened to its previous occupants.

Given that the remake came to us courtesy of the writer and director of the original, this version is brimming with all the strange imagery and unsettling atmosphere that elevated Ju-On to international fame.

Despite receiving a lukewarm critical reception for being unable to match Ju-On in terms of scares, The Grudge has firmly cemented itself within the collective consciousness of western horror fans.

It turns out that creepy ghost children are the absolute worst no matter the culture or language they appear in.
