10 Most Terrifying Jump Scares In Horror Movie History

1. Insidious (2010)

Blumhouse

The Movie: James Wan's fourth and arguably best horror movie follows the Lambert couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) as they move into a new house with their two children. Their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) explores the attic and makes a strange discovery off camera. After, his body soon falls into an inexplicable coma which doctors cannot rouse him from. Horrifying supernatural events start to occur and it soon becomes evident that Dalton's body has become a vessel for ghosts who reside in another dimension.

The Scare: Some time after the family start to suffer terrifying visitations, Josh's mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) visits the house and recounts a dream where she saw a dark, shadowy figure standing in Dalton's room. When she asks the visitor what it wants, the creature replies, saying that it wants Dalton. Suddenly, a horrific red-faced demon appears directly behind Josh's face and loud noises come crashing down from Dalton's room.

Wan masterly misdirects the viewer in this scene, leading audiences to believe that the flashbacks are dangerous while the real world is safe, when in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Whether you think Insidious is a good film or not is irrelevant at this point. In each of his horror movies, Wan always delivers actual scares, rather than the false jump scares which many directors have come to rely on in recent years and it's extremely gratifying for old school horror fans that psychological terror is now coming back to the fore after years of torture porn and body horror.
