Moving away from the series’ usual cabin-in-the-woods setting, Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise took the scalp-tearing terror to a condemned LA apartment building. After mother-of-three Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) is possessed early in the film, her family is terrorised by masochistic demons.

From herein all-out insanity ensues as the family and the building’s remaining residents are subjected to the demons’ sadistic violence. The carnage continues until youngest daughter Kassie (Nell Fisher) and her aunt Beth (Lilly Sulivan) are the only ones left standing. Without any other options, they take their opportunity to escape when it looks like the deadites have been dealt with.

Heading out into the corpse-ridden hallway, Beth attempts to break down a door using a neighbour’s gun. But with Ellie awakening in the apartment, viewers know that the pair won’t be safe for long.

Before Beth has a chance to fire the weapon, the silence is broken by Ellie's demonic shriek as she taunts her sister. A jump cut then shows the possessed hurtling towards the survivors with their arms outstretched.

Though this isn’t the most frightening moment on this list, this scare nevertheless embodies the kind of over-the-top madness which makes the Evil Dead franchise so riotously fun to watch.
