10 Most Terrifying Jump Scares In Recent Horror Movies
3. Behind The Curtain - The First Omen (2024)
The feature debut from Arkasha Stevenson, The First Omen has proved to be one of the best surprises in recent years. Not only did this prequel capture the same style and tone of its classic 1976 predecessor, but the filmmaker also instilled a creeping sense of dread that oozed throughout the entire film to create a truly unnerving horror experience.
While much of the terror is rooted in this flick’s spine-chilling atmosphere, there are likewise a handful of jump scares deployed throughout this prequel. Although some of these are the sort of fake-out moments audiences expect from the genre, there’s one early scene that managed to catch viewers completely by surprise.
After arriving in Rome to take her vows as a nun, Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) finds herself in her room alone at night. While praying, she hears voices from her troubled childhood of two nuns talking about what to do if she has one of her “episodes”.
The camera pans around as Margaret searches the empty room. It comes to rest on her habit hanging on the wall. However, when the curtain blows into frame, a ghostly nun is revealed to be standing in the shadows.
The First Omen only got more terrifying from here.
