10 Most Terrifying Prospects In Film History

1. The Flesh Eating Zombie Apocalypse - Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Before Romero had his wicked way with the mythology, the Zombie was little more than a soulless marauder, often controlled by a Voodoo master but sometimes mutated by radioactive materials. Either way, you never saw Zombies taking bites out of human flesh; they were more likely to beat you to death than eat you to death. However, Romero took the entire idea of the Zombie and, with Night of the Living Dead, took it from scaryish-but-sort-of-dumb to possibly the most terrifying prospect ever put forth in cinema history. Apart from their new bitey disposition, Romero posited that bites cause the victim to first die, then return as a ghoul. A hugely terrifying prospect in itself as it effectively means that, in the zombie vs. human war, each soldier we lose effectively becomes an enemy. I'm not going to start pointing out all of Romero's subtextual critiques of consumerism and capitalism - you know about all of that already - but what I will say is that deathis one of the most terrifying prospects that humanity has to face. What's scarier than the idea of death physically standing up en-masse and coming to get you (Barbara)? Very little, at least that's my reasoning. Yeah sure, the Zombie has been literally done to death these days so the concept itself might have lost some of its initial bite; when Romero made Nigh of the Living Dead though, he really did bring the fears of a nation, the planet even, to life. So there are ten of the most terrifying prospects ever put forth in cinema. Anything we missed? Anything you'd like to add? Do let us know, eh?
