Because sometimes those likes, shares, and subscribes just aren't worth the trouble.

While horror very much has spells where particular subgenres and styles come to the fore and see an increase in popularity, one type of horror movie that's enjoyed plenty of time in the spotlight across the past decade or more is those films centred around social media activity.

Of course, so many people are all about the likes, the viewership, or having an extensive friend list or follower count, and some of the best horrors in recent memory have revolved around such topics. Being the murky world of horror, though, those offerings all obviously take a turn for the worse at some point, as characters find themselves targetted by stalkers, the supernatural, or just an outright plain old psychopath who enjoys chaos and carnage.

Whether it's Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, YouTube, or A.N. Other original platform created for the movie in question, the ten pictures featured here all do enough to make you question just how important having an online presence is. After all, if the characters involved in these films had opted to pull back on their online use, they wouldn't have found themselves in some truly terrifying situations.

So, with that in mind, here are ten of the most sinister horror movies that have social media at their core.

10. Influencer

Shudder

From director and co-writer Kurtis David Harder, Influencer became one of horror's standouts of 2023 upon landing on Shudder last year.

As the film opens, we're introduced to Madison, the titular influencer who's on a vacation in Thailand where she's having a bit of a naff time. While her public persona is having the best time and courting those likes, shares, and subscribes, the reality is that Madison is bored, lonely, spends most of her time rattling around her hotel room, and only turns on a smile when the camera starts rolling. That is, until she meets CW.

For CW, she becomes pals with Madison and pulls her out of her slump, turning this vacation into a fun one. Of course, this being a horror film, all is not as it seems with CW, and she soon takes her new friend to a remote island, drugs her, and leaves poor Madison for dead. And that's just the first 20 minutes of Influencer, with the movie then switching focus to CW as she imitates Madison and takes over her online life - all as Madison's boyfriend comes searching for her, and while another influencer, Jessica,  finds herself in CW's crosshairs.
