During the events of The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter had already rescued his friends countless times, destroyed the wicked Basilisk, and defeated Voldemort twice. Since the Dark Lord took a break from pestering Harry this time around, our bespectacled hero should have it easy this year.

Instead, Harry encounters a force that's arguably more chilling than Voldemort.

Before arriving in Hogwarts, Harry learns there's a manhunt for an escaped prisoner called Sirius Black. Hoping to find Sirius, the area is patrolled by gliding wraiths called Dementors.

Although the Dementors have a suitably eerie look, it's their behaviour that earns them a place on this list. Rather than attacking their victims directly, the 12-foot-tall phantoms feed on human happiness, paralysing anybody in their proximity with an overwhelming sense of depression.

This feeling can be so overbearing, it causes most people to faint after a few seconds - which Harry proves upon his first encounter with the cloaked creatures - and if a Dementor gorges on their prey's emotions for too long, they'll be reduced to a vegetative state, unable to feel happiness ever again.

After spending a moment with these heinous entities, Voldemort doesn't sound too bad.
