9. It's All Down Hill From The Start: Up (2009)
Wow, did Disney Pixar do a number on this one. The prologue to this movie is enough to put you off romantic relationships for life. In order to set up the film's lead, Carl Fredricksen, as a grumpy old codger with a short fuse, the audience is shown his tragic backstory.
We see Carl meet Ellie at a young age, they share a love for adventure and imagination, and soon become fast friends. We see them grow into young adults, get married, buy a house and settle down to a comfortable life, it's all very sweet. The fairy tale shatters when Ellie suffers a miscarriage. Together the two come to terms with the tragedy and focus on putting money aside for a trip to their childhood dream destination, Paradise Falls.
But, as it tends to do, life gets in the way and the couple are constantly forced to dip into their savings. Years go by and Ellie and Carl grow old. One day Carl decides to surprise his love with a trip away, but on the day he he intends to present her with the tickets, Ellie falls ill and dies. And that's just the first 10 minutes.
