10 Most Underrated Disaster Movies Of All Time

1. The Core

The Day After Tomorrow 2004
Paramount Pictures

The Core, released in 2003 and directed by Jon Amiel, might just be one of modern cinemas most overlooked and under-seen disaster movies. What makes it so entertaining and appealing is the unique and clever plot. All disaster movies have something that makes them different, be it the characters, the setting, and the disaster itself, but The Core takes the cake.

Much like Armageddon, it’s a wholly ridiculous concept, but it’s much better handled than the Michael Bay picture. After the Earth stops spinning, a team of scientists, astronauts and technicians (including Aaron Eckhart, Hillary Swank, Stanley Tucci and Bruce Greenwood) team up for a daring mission to drill into the Earth and get the planet spinning again by setting off a series of explosions at the core.

Despite it having some typically insane disaster movie tropes, including (but not limited to) an ability to survive being mere feet from molten magma and, y’know, digging through the planet to its actual core, the adventure flick manages to hold itself together with some staggering set pieces and some truly emotional moments.

It received mixed reviews upon its release, primarily focused on its silliness, but leave your brain at the door and focus on the characters (all of whom are wonderfully acted) and the intensity it offers, and what you have is a great disaster movie unfairly overshadowed by other films of its time.
