10 Most Underrated Disaster Movies Of All Time

9. Knowing

Say what you will about Nic Cage, the guy can come out with some occasionally solid films. Never has that been more true that with 2009’s Knowing. A twisting, horrific, creepy, bizarre science fiction epic, Knowing is a chilling mystery and an end of the world disaster piece all at once.

Cage portrays John Koestler, an astrophysics professor who finds a coded message in a fifty year old time capsule. A coded message which predicted the dates and death tolls of many of the world’s most tragic disasters. The hitch? Three of the dates (and death tolls) haven’t occurred yet, and the last one is a number total to the population of the entire planet. Koestler then desperately goes on a mission to investigate who wrote the code, and whether it’s the real deal or a sick hoax.

It’s a touch melodramatic at times, but has plenty of strong scenes and shocking twists to make the whole thing engaging enough. And Cage is on top form, aided by Rose Byrne’s supporting turn, and the intensity of the film never falters. Just as a good disaster film should be, really.
