6. The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013)
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty emerged as one of those films that people seemed to either really love or really hate: few seemed to think that it was "just OK." Whilst that's an understandable reaction (it's not the easiest movie in the world, nor is it as accessible as lots of other Ben Stiller vehicles), it does a huge injustice to what it is a seriously underrated remake: one that is bold, beautiful, and actually rather complex. A remake of the 1947 film of the same name (of which it shares little resemblance), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty stars Ben Stiller as the hero of the title - a daydreamer with a penchant for conjuring up adventurous scenarios. Stiller gives a wonderful performance in a movie whose message genuinely seems to be "live life to fullest," and there are moments of real life scattered throughout the picture that render it as genuinely tender and heartfelt. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty clings to a score of just 50% on critical aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, which seems genuinely unfair. It's rare that the critics get a movie as wrong as they did this one, but Walter Mitty - whilst not perfect - has a lot to give. It is a rare remake that not only transcends the original, but dares to go further. And it succeeds.
