5. Hardcore Henry

Hardcore Henry wasn't based on a video game, but it might as well have been; that was the point of this underrated first-person action flick - one which received little critical acclaim upon its release but deserved a lot more praise for being a) seriously inventive and b) a hell of a lot of fun.

Yes, the plot is underdeveloped and the characters are paper thin (our main hero is a half-man, half-robot who wakes up in a Moscow lab to seek revenge), but there is much joy to be had in the relentless pace and endless carnage; as a result, Hardcore Henry feels like one of the most original action films... well, ever.

The measly reception that greeted this movie's arrival seems partly based on the fact that the majority of the critics wrote it off as a mere gimmick. Thing is, the gimmick is exactly what makes it such a blast from start to finish; if your eyes hurt and you've get the beginnings of a headache by the time the credits are rolling, try playing a video game for two hours straight - that's how it goes.

In truth, though, non-gamers weren't really the target audience for this film, so you can sort of understand a general dismay. If the basic premise appeals to you on any level, however - a video game-inspired action film shot entirely in first-person - then chances are you'll love what the filmmakers have done here.
