10 Most Underrated Psychological Horror Movies

4. Cam

Cam Netflix

Released in 2018, Cam is a teen horror which derives its scares from a more psychological source than the typical hack and slash fare the demographic is usually expected to settle for.

Exploring the world of camgirls and identity theft gives this psychological horror a contemporary twist and allows the filmmakers to discuss themes of identity and self in the internet age.

Whilst also, you know, being scary as s***.

Cam sees its heroine, a part time camgirl, unsettled and terrified when an identical double steals her account and begins performing in her place. Worried for both her income and her safety (which are pretty closely linked for most modern millenials), the heroine is forced to try and track down this elusive double.

What follows is a twisty and intense mystery which takes a turn into vaguely sci-fi territory in its final act (no prizes for guessing how that change takes place).

Whilst the conclusion may be somewhat predictable, the path Cam takes to get there isn't. The film is a bracing and intense slice of psychological horror which is guaranteed to leave viewers uneasy about the social media selves they maintain.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
