10 Most Unexpectedly Awesome Movies Of 2015 (So Far)

6. Predestination

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84% A low-budget sci-fi movie from the Spierig Brothers starring Ethan Hawke had all the makings of straight-to-DVD schlock, and though Predestination certainly embraces its B-movie influences, it also happens to be one of the best reviewed films of the year. Rather unexpected, given that this flick came and went with little fanfare and pulled in just $3.5 million at the box office (it was made in 2014, but wasn't released in the US until 2015). Simply put, Predestination is a total and utter blast from start to end: a crazy, relentless, balls to the wall time travel caper that gets a genuine kick out of playing with established genre tropes and taking them as far as it can go - not to mention it has a heart, too. What makes Predestination totally worthwhile, however, is the detail. It's a dense and endlessly interesting movie that manages to bring a new dimension to time travel sci-fi movies, whilst never taking itself too seriously. It's a future cult classic, without a doubt.
