Release Date: September 16, 2016 Bridget Jones hasn't been a "thing" since 2004, when a lackluster sequel to the first film, titled The Edge Of Reason, sort of killed the charm of the series and left everyone with bad memories of their money wasted. Lightning didn't strike twice, basically, and - despite it being based on another novel - the sequel felt far too silly and cobbled together. So the world hasn't seen Bridget Jones on the big screen for close to 12 years now, and chances are you haven't been all that interested in what she's been up to in that time. Bridget Jones's Baby will see Renee Zellweger back in the saddle, reprising what is arguably her most famous role as the titular character. But in case you haven't noticed, Renee Zellweger doesn't look like Renee Zellweger any longer; most people who sit down to this movie will end up saying: "Oh, what a shame: they recast Renee Zellweger." No, they didn't, guys. That's her. That's Bridget Jones, now 46. No Hugh Grant this time around, just so you know, but there will be Colin Firth (and Patrick Dempsey). Despite the fact that it retains the director of the first film and has been co-written by Emma Thompson, nobody is really hankering for this belated sequel, surely?
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
