10 Most Unnecessary Times Star Wars Used CGI
1. The "Enhanced" Sarlaac - Return Of The Jedi (Special Edition)
And finally, we end with a textbook example of how George Lucas' "improvements" of the original movies end up feeling like less than the sum of their parts.
For the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi, Lucas decided that the sarlacc which the heroes are almost fed to didn't look detailed enough, and so digitally added tentacles, a beak, and a tongue.
Yet this remains a hugely contentious change among the fandom, with many feeling that the sarlacc's sparer original presentation made it more mysterious and unnerving - an ancient creature whose physiology was effectively beyond human comprehension.
And so, giving the sarlacc more recognisably animalistic physical properties stripped much of that mystery away, making it look more like a cartoon - a far cry from its more creepily minimalistic original design.
Basically, nobody complained that the original sarlacc didn't look creepy enough, and yet, Lucas just couldn't resist scrawling all over it.
