10 Most Unreliable Movie Narrators Of All Time

9. Malcolm Crowe - The Sixth Sense

The most surprising thing about The Sixth Sense’s infamous twist is not the twist itself, but the fact that none of us saw it coming. Dr Malcolm Crowe never interacts with anyone else in the film, besides the boy who can ‘see dead people’, and the movie literally opens with Crowe being shot by a former patient of his.

But it still came as a huge surprise to learn that the man who had been attempting to cure the young Cole Sear of his morbid hallucinations was actually dead himself. Since his every word of advice comes from a place of ignorance (he cannot accurately comment on Cole’s condition or the world around him, because he no longer corporeally exists within it), he is an incredibly unreliable narrator, a glorified red herring whose sole purpose is to gaslight the audience.
