7. Saint Maud (2019)

The Witch Anya Taylor Joy

The acclaimed feature debut from writer-director Rose Glass, Saint Maud follows the titular and devoutly religious Maud (Morfydd Clarke) as she becomes obsessed with her latest patient, a once famous dancer and choreographer named Amanda (Jennifer Ehle).

Having left her previous job as a nurse after a traumatic incident, the palliative carer becomes convinced that God has tasked her with saving Amanda’s soul. Throughout the course of the film, Maud’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, with her religious fever causing her to commit wince-worthy acts of self-mutilation and experience hallucinations which she interprets as signs from God.

The tension continues to build in this slow-burn outing until an intense confrontation between Maud and Amanda ends in violence and tragedy. However, Maud’s work isn’t finished yet. She still has one important task left.

Walking to the beach the next morning dressed in white robes, she douses herself in petrol in front of confused onlookers. Igniting a lighter, Maud watches as the people around her bow in awe as she’s bathed in an angelic light.

However, this brief serenity is interrupted by a jump cut to Maud burning alive before the screen cuts to black. With that, viewers are left stunned as the credits roll.
