When journalist Reiko (Nanako Matsushima) stumbles upon a cursed video tape said to kill whoever watches it after seven days, she finds herself in a race against time to end to the tape's curse before it claims the life of her and her young son (Rikiya Ôtaka).

Steeped in a spine-chilling atmosphere, Ringu's suspense tightens its grip as the seventh day approaches. But it's the film's ending that is forever cemented in horror history.

After uncovering the tragic fate of what happened to the girl in the video, Reiko believes that she's succeeded in lifting the curse.

In a cruel twist, however, it's revealed that she only survived by passing the curse on to her ex-husband Ryūji (Hiroyuki Sanada).

Back at home, Ryūji watches in disbelief as his TV switches on to show the girl walking towards the screen. He and viewers look on helplessly as she crawls through the screen.

A jump cut to the girl's vengeful eye is the final scare before the film ends on Ryūji's dying expression.
