10 Movie Adaptations That Changed The Ending For The Better

1. Fight Club

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVof0qj7SOw The ending of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club is still great in its own way, but doesn't quite lend itself as well to the cinematic medium. It involves Project Mayhem's plan failing; the bombs don't explode, and so Jack ends up being thrown into a mental institution. The chillingly funny final scene has one of the orderlies refer to Jack as "Mr. Durden", suggesting that his journey is not yet over. The movie ending instead has the bombs going off and Jack (Edward Norton) standing with Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), a hilarious, darkly optimistic ending that actually makes it seem like everything might finally be alright for Jack. Why is this ending better? For one thing, cinema audiences love explosions. For another, the ending of the novel is too ambiguous; some have assumed that the final scene suggests that the entire story therefore existed in Jack's head, and some even think that the mental institution is in fact an allegory for Heaven, and that Jack is dead. Even Palahniuk agrees that the film's ending is an improvement, stripping away the ambiguity and going for bluntly brilliant, visceral impact. After such a thrill-ride by way of David Fincher's superb direction, the mopey lack of clarity would have felt like such a comedown. Which film ending do you think is most an improvement over the source material? Let us know in the comments below.
