10 Movie Casting Choices That Should've Worked (But Didn't)
6. Robert Downey Jr. As Doctor Dolittle - Dolittle
As heartbreaking as it was to say goodbye to Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, moviegoers were eager to see Robert Downey Jr sink his teeth into another meaty role.
So, when the Iron Man star was cast as the titular character in Dolittle, it looked like we had another franchise on our hands.
Sure, most other adaptations of the animal-talking doctor have been god-awful, but we were sure Downey Jr would devise a character as influential as his Marvel counterpart. Even if the film was rubbish, RDJ was sure to blow us away since he’s never delivered a single bad performance.
Until he did. Make no mistake, this is the worst acting of Downey Jr’s career… by a long shot. He drenches the character in so many eccentricities, it feels like his goal was to make Dolittle wacky rather than a fleshed-out human being.
Because Downey Jr can find the humanity in the most surreal character, you’d think you would be moved when Dolittle has to be sincere. But all of Dolittle’s heartfelt moments are let down by Downey Jr’s abominable Welsh accent. At least, your writer thinks it’s meant to be Welsh...
Even though the Dolittle adaptation had a horde of problems, Downey Jr’s performance was the worst by far.
