10 Movie Casting Choices That Should've Worked (But Didn't)

3. Jared Leto As Joker – Suicide Squad

People were up in arms when Jared Leto was cast as the Joker in Suicide Squad. And when they saw his revised look. And when they got their first taste of the character in the movie trailer.

But then again, the same thing happened when Heath Ledger was cast as Batman's arch-nemesis in The Dark Knight. Because this hate was clearly unwarranted, there were many who believed Leto deserved a chance.

Considering he was cast immediately after winning an Oscar, there was no reason to think Leto wouldn’t give it his all. After hearing he'd gone method for the role, performed crazy pranks on his co-stars, and promised his performance would out-of-this-world, we couldn't help getting excited.

But not only was Joker barely in Suicide Squad, he might be the worst thing in it. Although Leto poured his heart and soul in the role, he tries WAY too hard to be edgy. Whether he's snarling like a panther or calling people “honka-honka” (whatever that is), you never think this chalk-skinned clown is the most feared man in Gotham.

When Zack Snyder announced he was adding a Joker scene in his cut of Justice League, it sounded like Leto had an opportunity to redeem himself. Sadly, the actor gave another hammy performance, irrefutably proving he was never right for the role.
