10 Movie Character Backstories Revealed Years Later
7. Marty Met Doc After Sneaking Into His Lab - Back To The Future
Back to the Future fans had long wondered precisely how high schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and aged professor Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) came to meet one another, considering that with an age gap of around half-a-century while being in no way related, they're hardly the most natural of duos.
Theories have persisted for years, but back in 2011 - some 26 years after the original movie was released - writer-producer Bob Gale finally confirmed how Marty came to be friends with Doc. In Gale's own words:
"Okay, from the horse’s mouth (yes, I’m the horse - er, co-writer, co-creator): We never explained it in the movie. But the history of the characters that Bob Zemeckis and I created is this.
For years, Marty was told that Doc Brown was dangerous, a crackpot, a lunatic. So, being a red-blooded American teenage boy, age 13 or 14, he decided to find out just why this guy was so dangerous. Marty snuck into Doc’s lab, and was fascinated by all the cool stuff that was there. when Doc found him there, he was delighted to find that Marty thought he was cool and accepted him for what he was.
Both of them were the black sheep in their respective environments. Doc gave Marty a part-time job to help with experiments, tend to the lab, tend to the dog, etc. And that’s the origin of their relationship."
So, there it is - as a rebellious young teen, Marty sneaked into Doc's lab and Doc, a lonely scientist viewed as a pariah by many, embraced him rather than send him away. Simple, but quite sweet in its own way.
