10 Movie Characters Who Aren't What You Think

7. Ursula Is Ariel's Aunt - The Little Mermaid

Ursula (Pat Carroll) is of course the villainous sea witch who strikes a deal with Princess Ariel (Jodi Benson) in The Little Mermaid, allowing Ariel to become human for three days in exchange for her voice.

But in actuality, Ursula was originally intended to be the sister of Ariel's father King Triton (Kenneth Mars), making her Ariel's aunt.

The idea was scrapped during production yet not ejected out of the canon entirely, as Ursula mentions previously residing in Triton's palace - "In my day, we had fantastical feasts...when I lived in the palace."

Disney has a well-noted obsession with making their stories as incestuous as possible, so it's not that surprising, and despite being only hinted at in the final movie, there's nothing within the released product which contradicts those original plans.
