10 Movie Characters Who Discovered That Their Universe Didn’t Exist

5. The Island (2005)

Ignoring the fact that this movie was totally predicted in an episode of the sitcom Yes, Dear, (Season 4, Episode 3, look it up), this movie is a very engaging story about a supposedly post-apocalyptic society living inside a tower which is the only place capable of supporting life. In truth, the inhabitants discover that they are merely clones of real-world people, created for the sole purpose of providing organ donations in the event of medical emergencies. Lovely.

While this is technically not a false reality within a real reality type of movie, if you look into it on a more metaphorical level, the characters are led to believe that the world outside – one they can see in monitors that they think are windows – is an inhospitable wasteland of death and destruction. As such, they have their own little society which is a complete ruse to keep them busy until their insides need to be harvested. But if you have any concerns in the end as to whether or not the world in which they inhabit is the real one, just remember that Sean Bean dies in this movie, so it’s definitely the real world.
