10 Movie Characters Who Had To Kill Themselves To Win

9. Superman - Superman III

Superman III is in no way a good movie, but easily its most entertaining subplot sees Superman (Christopher Reeve) exposed to synthetic Kryptonite, which turns him "evil." He then becomes a binge-drinker, rocks a five o'clock shadow and becomes everything the Man of Steel typically isn't.

This leads to the single great scene in the entire movie - the iconic junkyard fight, where the upstanding Clark Kent and corrupted Superman are literally separated into two entities who battle one another for supremacy.

It's a shamelessly silly but genuinely well-crafted fight, an "everything but the kitchen sink" super-brawl which concludes with Clark literally throttling Evil Superman until he disappears from existence.

The Clark/Superman dichotomy is resolved, allowing him to fix every problem Superman caused and stop the villainous coffee magnate (!) Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn) once and for all.

The junkyard battle brilliantly externalises the grandest superhero metaphor of all - that one can so easily become their worst enemy.
