10 Movie Characters Who Look Nothing Like Their Source Material
8. Emma Stone as Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan - The Help
Based on Kathryn Stockett's novel of the same name, 2011's The Help recounts the relationship between a young white woman - Emma Stone's Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan - and two black housemaids at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.
Despite receiving four Oscar nominations, the film's legacy has been irrevocably tainted in recent years. Star Viola Davis has repeatedly expressed regret for starring in Tate Taylor's picture, positing that it was "created in the filter and cesspool of systemic racism".
In addition to the movie's fraught reputation, The Help's final take on "Skeeter" looks nothing like the description of the character in the novel. Emma Stone may possess Eugenia's signature red hair, but her flowing locks are a hell of a long way from "frizzy". Furthermore, the young woman's gangly stature and crooked nose as alluded to by Stockett are nowhere to be seen across 146 minutes.
While it doesn't have anything to do with her appearance, it's also worth noting that the novel paints Phelan as one of three main characters. Taylor's offering depicts her as more of a sole protagonist, in yet another deviation from Stockett's writing.
